Offshore on Diversion: A Journey of Speed, Challenge & Family Resilience

Broker Laurent from 36° recently joined the owner and a crew of five aboard the Mcat 52 Diversion for an unforgettable offshore passage from Marsden Cove to Fiji — a trip that packed in every element of a true bluewater adventure.

With eight days at sea, including a two-day stopover at Minerva Reef, the voyage offered both thrilling sailing conditions and memorable moments with family. The first leg brought challenging conditions — 25–30 knots of breeze on a close reach, and Diversion charging ahead at over 13 knots. The boat handled the pressure with ease, but for the crew, it was a tough start.

The rough weather took its toll on Laurent’s family, with seasickness setting in for the first 24 hours. “Watching your loved ones go through that and not being able to help is tough,” Laurent said. But with resilience (and a 300g steak), his young son Maxence made a strong comeback — earning laughs from the crew with his eat-sleep-recover routine.

The reward came at Minerva Reef, where the conditions settled and the water turned crystal clear. It was here the crew caught their breath, and where a stowaway bird hitched a ride for two days, perched comfortably on the rails. Other highlights included a flying fish landing onboard (which Laurent proudly held up for a photo), epic sunset scenes, and even a successful tuna catch while sailing at 18 knots.

There’s a very cute moment captured below — Laurent at the helm under sail, with Maxence beside him, ropes in hand. It’s a snapshot of what sailing on Diversion is all about: speed, connection, and freedom on the water.

From family challenges to fast sailing, Diversion proved herself as a capable and comfortable offshore performer — one that delivered lasting memories for all on board.
