Opua-based 36° Broker Robbs and 36° Services crew Julia Hamilton ventured to Fiji to take part in the 40th Musket Cove Regatta.

The event kicked off with the Opua Business Association breakfast, which brought sailors ashore for a relaxed start to the festivities. With participants from all over the world, it felt like a true meeting of the sea’s united nations.

The Regatta’s reputation for legendary dress-up parties continues to grow. This year’s themes—Pirate Party and 80s-themed bash—did not disappoint. Participants went all out with LED dresses and full pirate costumes, making for a time of excitement and laughter.

The Hobie Cat competition was fierce, thanks to a new jib supply that made the boats easier to handle. Race day saw chess-like conditions with light winds challenging everyone’s sailing skills. Despite this, the fleet’s determination pushed them through the course.

One unique aspect of the Regatta is the mix of cruising groups. The event saw Island Cruising members mingling with ocean cruisers from Panama and beyond, making the Musket Cove Regatta a natural gathering point before many head south for the upcoming South Pacific summer season.

Beyond the on-water excitement, the Regatta is a prime networking opportunity. Participants could discuss customs with New Zealand officials—who were also dressed in pirate gear!—chat about weather routes, and get valuable insights for the journey ahead, all in a relaxed setting while sipping on coconut water and watching the Hobie Cat racing.
